Programs - Coach & RiderOctober 2008

As we head into the fall, and show season begins to wind down, it’s time to think about what to do over the winter.  Do you need updating hours?  Has your first aid expired?  Looking to network with some other coaches and industry members?  Then you should attend to the 2008 OEF Annual Conference.  We have an excellent line up of speakers and sessions that are sure to be of interest to the coach, industry participant, horse owner, student and parent.  Click here for the full Conference Program.

Rider Level Programs
Just a reminder to all instructors and coaches actively testing in the Western and English rider level programs.  Please be sure that candidates are current OEF members at the time of the test.  It is the examiners responsibility to submit the entire test (summary sheet, evaluation sheet and written test) as soon as possible, with the administration fee payable to the OEF.  We get lots of phone calls from anxious candidates wondering when they will get their certificate.  Also, make sure the candidate’s personal information is completely filled out, and that you have signed the test.  Should you have any questions about the rider level programs, please contact Jennifer Irwin at edu2@horse.on.ca

Plan to Attend the 2008 OEF Annual Conference

The Conference Committee has planned an exciting educational event for everyone.  The 2008 OEF Annual Conference “For the Love of the Horse” will be held at the Delta Meadowvale Resort & Conference Centre in Mississauga from Friday, November 28 to Sunday, November 30.  A St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid course is scheduled for Friday for those who need to renew their certificaiton.  The NCCP/Equine Canada Equestrian Specific 2-day Training Workshop for Instructor and Coach 1 candidates will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The OEF is pleased to invite all Instructors and Coaches, in all disciplines, to attend the second, free-of-charge Coaches’ Forum taking place late afternoon on Friday.  This forum will be facilitated by Anna Mees, Senior Coaching Consultant from the Coaches' Association of Canada.  A trained Learning Facilitator with the National Coaching Certification Program, Anna works with national sport federations to develop their competency-based coach training curriculum.  She has guided a number of federations in the development of their coach training programs for community sport including Tennis Canada, the Canadian PGA, Skate Canada, Swimming Canada and Equine Canada.  Anna currently competes in hunter/jumper.  In this session, Anna will discuss the changes to the NCCP and how it affects equestrian instructors and coaches.

As an Instructor or Coach – what other education sessions might be of interest to you?  We have a number of excellent speakers confirmed on various topics.  Consider attending the HorseCare Magazine Hot Seat Panel with breeding expert Dr. Pat Meyers, nutritionist Dr. John Burton, and equine surgeon Dr. Marc Desjardins.  All three will be put on the spot to answer pointed questions that every horse owner wants to know.  The Conformation Part B session with Dr. Marvin Beeman will be giving a presentation on the effect conformation has on the dynamics of equine locomotion and the correlation of defects in conformation that contribute to ailments in the horse.  Understanding Learning with Jim Craigen will focus on some of the factors that influence how learners receive, process, retain and recall information.  Bringing out the Best in Others with Andy Higgins; Andy is a lifetime educator whose focus has been physical education, counselling and sport.  He wrote and delivered the first formal coaching education/certification program in Canada.  He will speak on ways to motivate and mentor to bring out the best in athletes.  The Confident Rider with Dr Julia Holt will provide techniques that participants can take away for increasing confidence and enhancing performance.

Your younger students may be interested in our Kids’ Corral taking place on Sunday, November 30.  This time it will be at the hotel.  This half-day interactive program for juniors will consist of six stations covering such fun and educational topics as rider fitness, braiding and banding, equine photography, horse first aid, disciplines 101 and biosecurity.  As part of the focus on safety, we ask all participants to bring their helmet with them.  We once again will also be hosting a complimentary Parent Information Session, where they will learn all they need to know as a parent of a child that rides.

New for 2008, is the Career Trak presented by HorseJobs.ca.  Are you considering a new career, or enhancing your career?   Several representatives from the industry educators and the trades will be on hand to answer your questions.  Most important, the Career Trak is free of charge, and open to anyone.  For a complete listing of exhibitors, please visit our website at www.horse.on.ca
