Coaches’ Corner - October 2006
A reminder to all Instructors and Coaches regarding your updating requirements: Along with maintaining your annual Equine Canada and OEF memberships, and holding a current First Aid Certificate on file with the OEF Office, coaches are required to complete and submit updating hours to the OEF every 3-year period starting January 01 of the year after they were certified. For example, if you were certified in June 2005, your first updating period would be from January 01, 2006 to December 31, 2008.
Are you a certified Instructor or Coach but your coaching status is currently inactive? The goal of the updating requirements is to continue developing a well-rounded base of knowledge. Please note that each discipline has it’s own specific updating policy.
English ~ The updating requirement for Instructors, Coach 1s and 2s is to obtain 20 hours of updating for professional development every 3 year period. Most activities are worth hour for hour of updating up to a maximum of 6 hours. Did you know you could earn updating hours by taking lessons, attending courses such as the Learn to Teach and NCCP Module B, attending other discipline clinics, or auditing a Coach evaluation (prior permission from the OEF Office and the Course Conductor(s) is required)? Mentoring requirements for higher-level certification and Coaching Symposiums are eligible for up to 10 hours of updating.
Western ~ The updating requirement for Instructors and Coach 1s and 2s is to attend an OEF Western Updating Clinic once every 3 year period. Instructors and Coaches can be given credit for attending updating seminars in other provinces upon approval of the OEF and Ontario’s Master Course Conductor. Under extenuating circumstances, a Coach may audit a Coach 1 Assessment or an Instructor may audit an Instructor Assessment, which could substitute for an updating seminar, but MUST BE pre-approved by the OEF Western Coaching Committee. Effective January 01, 2000, any Coach or Instructor who does not attend an update clinic for more than 5 years or allows their certification to lapse for more than 5 years for any reason, according to the National Western Coaching Policy and Procedures, that coach must participate in another Coach Assessment or the Instructor must participate in another Instructor Assessment and have a current First Aid certificate and OEF and EC memberships to be re-activated.
Saddle Seat ~ The updating requirements for Coach 1s is to obtain 20 hours of updating every 3 year period. The 20 hours must come from a variety of areas, but 6 of the total 20 hours must be Saddle Seat specific. Updating hours obtained by riding in clinics and/or taking lessons with a certified national or international coach must be approved by the Ontario Master Course Conductor to count.
A reminder that renewing your First Aid certification is not eligible for updating hours. Please note that any additional hours obtained during an updating period, although beneficial for personal growth, will not be carried over to the next updating period.
