The Great Lakes still suffer to this day under the burden of too much phosphorus.  Equine farms and horse operations can contribute unknowingly to the overall phosphorus additions to the Great Lakes through manure handling procedures and by not necessarily following best management practices on their farms.  We are looking for equine farm owners from Simcoe and Dufferin Counties to assist with the development of community based social marketing programs that would be initially targeted at Equine farmers in pilot programs south of Georgian Bay.   If you would like to assist by attending a short focus group session on this topic,  please contact  Ryan Post at rpost@nvca.on.ca

Local veterinary clinic holds educational conference to
raise money for community charities
March 6, 2010

Local veterinary practice McKee Pownall Equine Services is hosting the McKee Pownall Equine Service Educational Conference, the first equine-healthcare event of this scale to be held in the Greater Toronto Area on March 6th, 2010. Dr. Mike Pownall and Dr. Melissa McKee lead this established veterinary practice that has several locations in the Greater Toronto Area. The conference is being held at the Mississauga Convention Centre, located conveniently just north of the 401 in Mississauga.

Attendees can choose from a variety of speakers such as Dr. Daryl Bonder, Dr. Andrew Peregrine and Dr. Katie Smith who are key figures in their respective fields. “We realized that our annual client education day was a great opportunity to combine two of our fundamental interests: helping clients learn more about horses and horse care, and improving equine welfare through charitable work” said Dr. Pownall. Dr. McKee also commented “We are excited to bring in outside speakers this year and thanks to you we will be able to make a major contribution to Long Run Thoroughbred Rescue, the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, and the Canadian Association for Riding for the Disabled (C.A.R.D.)” Participants can register online or in person on the day of the event, although space is limited so register early to avoid disappointment. This event is open to all GTA residents who would like to help these community charities, and its key sponsors include Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and Bayer HealthCare.

C.A.R.D is well-known for its therapeutic programs which assist both children and adults to enjoy horses as well as the physical and psychological benefits that come from interacting with them. OSAS and Long Run have adoption programs designed to place racehorses that need new homes and careers within the equine community.

McKee Pownall Equine Services was established by Dr. Pownall and Dr. McKee in 2002 and has four veterinary clinics across the Greater Toronto Area. All locations offer comprehensive preventative health care, dentistry, emergency services, and advanced lameness diagnostics. The Campbellville (Rockwood) location includes the only veterinary podiatry clinic and standing MRI system in Canada. To learn more about McKee Pownall Equine Services, visit  http://www.mpequine.com.
